Attitude towards abortion among teenagers in Bendel State of Nigeria

Osayuki G. Oshodin

Department of Health and Physical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria

DATA on the attitude of teenagers in Bendel State of Nigeria were collected from a sample of 1,805 secondary school students. By means of frequen cy and percentages of responses to items, results showed that the majority of the students felt abortion was desirable. However the females, the older students (14-17 years old) generally felt strongly that abortion was desirable. They also feel that it is valuable to explore opinions regarding abortion, i.e. to assess ways of preventing abortion. There is then a need for emphasis on sex education and to legalised abortion on special grounds (medical reasons) in this society.
