Occupational Allergy to Laboratory AnimalsBeecham Pharmaceuticals Research Division, Yew Tree Bottom Road, Epsom, Surrey KT18 5XQ, England ALLERGY TO laboratory animals (LAA) is a recognised problem amongst scientific and technical staff employed in research establishments. The symptoms exhibited are similar to those of immediate type allergic reactions such as hay fever but in certain cases can progress to allergic asthma. The major sources of allergenic proteins are from the urine, pelt, saliva and dander of the four commonest species used; rats, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs. Objective diagnostic tests have been developed and limited aeroenvironmental monitoring has been carried out in the further scientific evaluation of this problem.
